The other day I woke up to a message from a friend that I believe to have truly determined the outcome of my day.
After receiving a message like this, a message that is so encouraging, so positive, and so filled with love, how could I have not had a fantastic day? I did love myself, I was grateful, and I was productive!
This morning I received a similar message, but this one read:
‘ Queen Ally is proclaiming that today will be another great day woman! Give me your 10 things that you are thankful for this morning to start!’
And so I did.
1. ‘I am grateful for having a great friend like you who is so positive and encouraging and so loving!’
And I really, truly am. Ally is a beautiful soul, she brightens up everyday. I cannot even put into words how grateful I am to have met her and gotten so close to her these past few months. She has taught me so many things; things about myself, things about the world, things about growth, things about what is and is not important. But most importantly, she has taught me to laugh! Not that I’ve ever had a problem with laughing before, but since I’ve met her the amount of laughs in my day have dramatically increased. She says the most vulgar, ridiculous, crazy and hilarious things. Each day I laugh so hard because of this girl. She’s taught me that things don’t always need to be so serious, I don’t always need to act mature. I can laugh at stupid things. And for that, I am thankful!
2. ‘I am grateful for all the opportunities I’ve had that have lead me to where I am today. (Especially my trip to Asia)’
I honestly would not be where I am today if I had not gone to Asia. I wasn’t even aware that anthropology was a thing, and here I am, now taking it as my major in university. If I hadn’t of taken the year off to travel, I would never have started working at Secure Energy. And if I had never started working at a doctors office I would never have been able to be qualified for the job I have at Secure Energy. Each good thing leads to another, and I’m in a beautiful place because of all the opportunities and experiences I’ve had. And for that, I am thankful! ( And on top of that all, I am simply just feeling extremely nostalgic lately.)
3. ‘Even though both of my jobs tend to bug the crap out of me often, I am so fortunate to have them. They pay so good and they will lead me to good places.’
I think that frustration and stress due to jobs is inevitable, and honestly it’s been catching up with me a little bit lately. But the reality of the situation is that I am sooo fortunate to have these jobs. They both are truly amazing, and are such good experiences for me. I may work my butt of, and a break from it would be nice, but they’ve allowed me to go to Asia, live and enjoy life, and so much more. Not to mention, because of them I am less than $500 away from paying off my $12 000 trip to Asia…. in less than one year. For that, I am thankful !
4. ‘I am thankful that after tonight we will no longer have another geo class!!!!’
(Sorry to all the geologists in my life!) This class has been the most unenjoyable thing for me this semester. Just simply put, it will be so wonderful to not have to deal with it after tonight! And for that, I am thankful!
5. ‘I am thankful for the opportunity to move forward. And the opportunity to open my heart.’
And for that, I am thankful!
6. ‘I am really thankful for my comfy bed. It’s like, really really really comfy.’
This morning I was planning to get up nice and early to get to school and study a ton! But… my bed is REALLY comfy. And so I laid there for a very long time, and as I wrote this all I was still laying in my comfy bed. Under all the millions of blankets and pillows. Even though I didn’t really mind sleeping on cots, bamboo floors, rock hard beds, trains and planes etc. while I was backpacking, I definitely do enjoy the level of comfort I am able to have in my bedroom. And for that, I am thankful!
7. ‘I am thankful that I have a car and a license so that I can drive my lazy butt to school today!’
As I was writing this in my extremely comfy bed, I was appreciating the fact that I didn’t have to take the bus across the city today. I don’t mind taking the bus and it does indeed save me a bit of money, but this during finals this week I have decided to reward myself with a nice, comfortable, heated journey to school. And for that, I am thankful!
8. ‘I am thankful for the food I will soon put in my grumbling belly.’
I think this is a pretty straight forward thing to be grateful for! Especially with all of the holiday food drives and whatnot. Unfortunately, this basic need isn’t something that every person is able to have met. When I wake up in the morning I am able to have breakfast, and throughout the day I am able to stay full. For that, I am thankful!
9. ‘As stressful as school is, I am thankful for the opportunity to be doing it. A lot of people don’t get to. It’s really a privilege and I’m glad I get to be stressed.’
It’s been pointed out to me before that many of the things that cause me stress are things that are really great in my life. Sometimes it’s hard to see this clearly, but as soon as I am able to move past whatever obstacle I am presented with, I always end up agreeing. School definitely falls into this. I am so fortunate to be going to the University of Calgary, and ultimately enjoying what I’m learning about. And not to mention, I am so fortunate to have loving parents that are paying my tuition (for my first degree)! I have no idea where I will end up in all of this, but I know that it’s going to be a beautiful journey, and that the places it will take me are going to be truly amazing. Only time will tell, but I’m incredibly excited. For this I am thankful.
10. ‘I am thankful for havinng (at least!) ten things to be thankful for.’
My list could really, truly go on. And on. An on. I am so blessed to be living the life I have. It is filled with such beauty. Beautiful people, beautiful experiences, beautiful opportunities. Just every part of my life is beautiful in one way or another. Even if it’s hard to recognize it all of the time. Each day presents me with new wonderful things, and there are always reminders of the wonderful constants in my life. I am so fortunate.
Thank you Ally for reminding me to take a step back and remember how great things are. And thank you, Ally, for sharing with me the things that you are grateful for.
She starts many of my days off in such a positive light, and I want to pass that on. So, whoever is reading this, you are beautiful, intelligent, strong, and worthy of so much. Be happy, love, let light into your life and let go of anything that is holding you back. You are loved.
Now, what are the ten things that you are thankful for?!
